Children Outreach Program
Feeding, treating, and coaxing kids off the dangerous streets
Runaways and troublemakers. Orphans whose parents
died of AIDS or for lack of basic medical care. For a variety of
heartbreaking reasons, 5,000 children sleep in Dnepropetrovsk’s
alleys, abandoned buildings, and apartment lobbies. Until the Great
Neck, NY, Jewish community purchased the Wheels for Life bus, no
one in the entire former Soviet Union was combing the area to offer
these children food, medical treatment, and a chance to get off
the streets. As night falls, the Wheels for Life bus driver and
social worker cruise city streets to give hot food and medical treatment
to these vulnerable children. All children are offered help regardless
of religious background. Whenever possible, Jewish children are
offered placement in the Benenson Homes.
