on Wheels for Shut-In Grandparents
When care is delivered door-to-door, struggling families can stay
together
A disturbing trend in Dnepropetrovsk: Parents
skip home and leave their children to be raised by elderly grandparents.
Many of these seniors go to heroic lengths to provide for their
grandchildren, but the seniors are too poor or too ill to buy nutritious
food for the children in their care. To help these seniors feed
their precious grandchildren, generous Jews in Great Neck, NY, have
sponsored the purchase of a brand new bus to deliver food basics
to these homebound grandparents. Social workers ride along to offer
seniors access to other social and health programs whenever needed.
The Wheels for Life bus now makes 50 stops and the number keeps
growing.
